A little time away

Make the journey part of the escape.

Stay overnight and let Phillip Island have an evening as well as a day. This compact EV itinerary starts through San Remo and Newhaven, uses Cowes as a practical base, and leaves the Penguin Parade as the main event rather than something to rush between a late charge and the drive home. The second day is for the coast at a gentler pace.

Your suggested itinerary

2 days. Room to enjoy it.

Day 1

Settle into the island before the evening

Break the drive at San Remo before crossing to Phillip Island. Continue to Cowes, check in and allow time for a meal before your booked Penguin Parade visit. Use the operator’s current arrival instructions and seasonal timings rather than a fixed time copied from an old itinerary. If you need to charge, complete it with enough margin that an occupied bay does not make you late for the main event.

  • San Remo
  • Cowes
  • Penguin Parade, with booking

Finish the day: Cowes or nearby

Day 2

Coastal views before returning to Melbourne

Choose a morning around the Nobbies or another open coastal area, checking current access first. Leave room for a sheltered-town option if the weather is rough. Have lunch before setting out for Melbourne and add any needed charging stop to the return route. A longer Bass Coast extension works better as another night than as a last-minute detour after checkout.

  • The Nobbies, subject to access
  • Cowes lunch
  • Melbourne

Finish the day: Home in Melbourne

Before you go

A few checks. A better trip.

  • Book the Penguin Parade directly and use the arrival guidance for your date.
  • Bring layers for an outdoor evening and let the next morning remain flexible.
  • Check the current access rules for the Nobbies and coastal walks before adding them to your day.

Useful answers

Your trip questions, answered.

Do I need to stay overnight on Phillip Island?

You can return to Melbourne after the Penguin Parade, but an overnight base makes the evening less rushed and avoids combining a late event with a long drive. This itinerary is designed around that stay.

Can I charge at the Penguin Parade?

The official destination guide lists charging facilities there. Check the current operator, connector and access conditions; have another option so your event booking does not depend on an available bay.

Is this a suitable family EV weekend?

The short two-day structure leaves room for meal breaks and a single main evening activity. Choose walks, viewing arrangements and accommodation around your family’s needs, and check accessibility directly with each venue.
