Public EV charging in Australia: a practical guide

Public charging becomes much easier once you separate three questions: will the plug fit, how fast can your EV actually charge, and how will you start and pay for the session? Australian charging sites range from slower destination AC chargers to high-power DC chargers designed for road-trip stops.

Check compatibility before you think about charging speed

Australian Government EV guidance identifies Type 2 as the standard plug used for most public AC charging, CCS2 as the standard fast-DC connector for most current EVs, and CHAdeMO as a DC alternative used by a more limited selection of vehicles.

A charger's headline kW rating is only the maximum capability of the charger. Your real charging speed is limited by the vehicle, battery state of charge, battery temperature, charger output and sometimes site conditions. A 350 kW charger does not make a car that accepts 100 kW charge at 350 kW.

AC vs DC

Destination charging and fast charging solve different problems

AC charging is often well suited to places where the car will already be parked for a while, such as hotels, shopping centres, workplaces and public car parks. Some public AC units are untethered, which means the driver supplies the cable.

DC fast charging bypasses the vehicle's onboard AC charger and supplies DC energy directly to the battery. It is generally the more useful choice when time matters on a longer journey, but the cost per kilowatt-hour can be higher than home charging or slower destination charging.

Check the app, price, availability and payment method

Public charging networks can use their own apps, RFID cards, contactless payment or other activation methods. Before a road trip, install the apps you are likely to need, create accounts where appropriate and make sure your phone and payment method work.

Charging tools can show locations, plug types, charger speed, price, live availability, amenities and recent user reports. Treat live status as useful information rather than a guarantee and keep an alternate charger in mind on routes with limited redundancy.

At the charger

A clean charging session is connect, confirm, monitor and move

Follow the instructions at the site and on the vehicle. Confirm on the charger or vehicle display that charging has actually started before walking away. Many network apps can then show progress remotely.

When the session finishes, disconnect correctly and vacate the charging bay. Some operators apply idle fees when a vehicle remains connected or occupies the bay after charging, and local parking restrictions may also apply.

Why road-trip charging often stops around 80%

Many EVs reduce charging power as the battery becomes fuller. Australian Government guidance notes that charging from 80% to 100% can take disproportionately longer than the earlier part of a fast-charge session.

On a busy public fast charger, leaving once you have enough energy for the next leg can be faster for you and fairer for the next driver. The right departure percentage still depends on the route, weather, terrain, next charger and your vehicle.

Do I need my own cable at a public EV charger?

Sometimes. Many DC fast chargers have a cable attached, while some slower public AC chargers require you to bring a compatible Type 2 cable. Check the site details before relying on it.

Can every EV use a CCS2 fast charger?

No. Connector compatibility depends on the vehicle. Most current Australian EVs use CCS2 for DC charging, but some vehicles use other standards or have different capabilities.

Why is my EV charging slower than the charger's advertised speed?

The advertised charger rating is a maximum. The vehicle, battery temperature, state of charge, charger output and site conditions can all limit the actual rate.

Should I charge to 100% at every public fast charger?

Usually not unless the next leg requires it. Many EVs charge more slowly above about 80%, so leaving with enough range for the next stop can reduce total trip time.
