Home EV charging in Australia: what owners need to know

Home is where most Australian EV charging happens. The right setup depends on how far you drive, where you park, your electrical supply, electricity tariff, solar and whether you live in a house or strata building.

You may not need the fastest charger

Australian Government guidance says around 80% of reported EV charging occurs at home. It also notes the average Australian drives about 33 km per day, so some owners can replenish normal daily driving from a standard power point.

The best home setup is therefore not automatically the highest-power wall charger. Start with your actual driving pattern, the time the vehicle is parked at home and the charging rate your EV can accept.

Level 1

Charging from a standard Australian power point

Level 1 charging uses a standard 240V outlet and supplies up to about 2.4 kW. Government guidance says a full charge can take up to 24 hours, but a full charge is rarely the relevant daily requirement if you only need to replace the energy used that day.

Use charging equipment suitable for the vehicle and installation. Government guidance recommends connecting the EV charging cable directly to the power point rather than using extension cords or power boards.

Level 2

When a dedicated home EV charger makes sense

A dedicated Level 2 AC charger typically supplies 7 to 22 kW, although the actual charging rate is limited by the charger, electrical installation and vehicle. Government guidance says these chargers can typically add around 30 to 80 km of range per hour and can be three to ten times faster than a standard outlet.

A dedicated charger must be installed by a licensed electrician. Depending on the property, switchboard or supply upgrades may be required.

Cost

Smart charging, tariffs and rooftop solar can matter more than raw speed

Smart charging can schedule the vehicle for lower-price periods or periods of excess rooftop solar generation. That can reduce charging costs and avoid unnecessary charging during peak-price periods where the tariff varies by time.

Before choosing a charger, understand your electricity plan as well as the hardware. A charger with useful scheduling or energy-management capability can be more valuable than simply selecting the largest kW number.

Apartments

Strata charging requires an additional planning step

If you live in an apartment or another shared building, you may need permission from the relevant strata or owners corporation before installing charging infrastructure. State and territory laws and building arrangements differ.

The electrical capacity of the whole building, metering, billing, parking rights and a pathway for future residents can all matter. A building-wide plan may be more scalable than treating every charger as an isolated installation.

Australian Government EV buying guidance recommends checking whether your home insurance covers EV charging at your residence. For motor insurance, check how portable charging cables and accessories are treated and whether any conditions apply.
