Destination EV charging in Australia: hotels, holidays and overnight charging
Destination charging works differently from a highway fast charger. The aim is usually not to charge as quickly as possible; it is to add useful range while the car would already be parked at a hotel, restaurant, attraction, workplace or other destination.
What it is
Destination charging is designed around dwell time
Destination chargers are commonly located where a vehicle will already remain parked for a useful period. Australian Government EV information notes that destination charging is increasingly available at places such as shopping centres, car parks, tourist locations and hotels.
Because the vehicle may be parked for several hours or overnight, AC charging can be entirely appropriate. The best charger is the one that is compatible with the car and adds enough energy during the time you will naturally spend at the location.

Before booking
Ask five questions before relying on accommodation charging
A charger icon on a booking page does not tell you whether the charger will work for your trip. Confirm how many charging bays exist, the connector type, expected charging power, access hours and whether the charger must be booked or paid for separately.
Also ask whether access is limited to guests and whether another vehicle can block the bay. If charging is critical to the next leg, identify a nearby public alternative before arriving.

AC charging
An overnight AC charge may be more useful than a short DC stop
For many overnight stays, the relevant question is whether the car can recover the energy needed for the next day before departure. A moderate AC charging rate can add substantial range over a long dwell period without requiring a separate stop at a fast charger.
Actual charging speed is limited by the site, electrical installation and the EV's onboard AC charger. Check the vehicle specifications rather than assuming the site rating will be the rate the car receives.
Holiday planning
Choose accommodation with the whole journey in mind
Destination charging can change a road-trip itinerary. If the vehicle can charge while you sleep, the next morning can begin with enough energy to reach an attraction or the next fast-charging hub without an early charging stop.
This is especially useful on family holidays, regional trips and multi-day journeys. However, charger availability can change, so keep enough flexibility to use an alternate charging option if necessary.
Insurance and property
Charging access does not change the need to follow site and vehicle rules
Use charging equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions and the rules of the property. Do not assume an ordinary power point is suitable for EV charging simply because it is physically accessible.
