A little time away

Make the journey part of the escape.

The Great Ocean Road deserves more than a race to one lookout. This three-day loop gives the coastal drive an overnight stop at Apollo Bay, then continues through the Otways to the Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell. Return inland on the final day so the coast has time to be the holiday rather than the quickest way home.

Your suggested itinerary

3 days. Room to enjoy it.

Day 1

Follow the coast to Apollo Bay

Use Torquay as the first substantial stop, then follow the coast through Lorne towards Apollo Bay. Choose a small number of pull-offs and park only where it is safe and permitted. The road is the experience today, so allow more time than a simple distance estimate suggests. Stay in Apollo Bay and arrange any necessary charging while you have time for dinner or a walk.

  • Torquay
  • Lorne
  • Apollo Bay

Finish the day: Apollo Bay

Day 2

Through the Otways to the limestone coast

Check the onward energy estimate before leaving Apollo Bay. Continue towards the Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell, choosing an Otways detour only if the weather, access and your schedule allow it. Give the signed coastal lookouts proper time, then stay in Port Campbell rather than attempting the entire return to Melbourne after sunset. Any extra lighthouse or forest drive belongs in the charging plan before departure.

  • Otways on the main route
  • Twelve Apostles lookouts
  • Port Campbell

Finish the day: Port Campbell

Day 3

A coastal breakfast, then the inland return

Have a final look around Port Campbell before starting the inland drive towards Melbourne. Enter the full return route and choose a compatible charging stop around a meal break if required. Returning inland avoids repeating the winding coastal leg when the group may already be tired. With an extra night, extend west as a separate itinerary rather than squeezing Warrnambool and Port Fairy into this departure day.

  • Port Campbell
  • Inland return via Colac
  • Melbourne

Finish the day: Home in Melbourne

Before you go

A few checks. A better trip.

  • Book two different overnight bases so the coast can be driven at an unhurried pace.
  • Check road and park alerts for wind, fire conditions and track closures before each day.
  • Use formal lookouts and parking areas; do not add unsealed shortcuts solely to reduce the mapped distance.

Useful answers

Your trip questions, answered.

Can the Great Ocean Road be driven in an EV?

Yes, with a plan matched to your car and current charging access. Distinguish slower overnight chargers from faster public stops, and include every detour in the energy estimate.

Is three days enough for this route?

Three days works for Melbourne, Apollo Bay, Port Campbell and an inland return. Add nights if you want longer walks, more Otways detours or an extension to Port Fairy.

Do I have to charge at every town?

No. Choose charging stops based on your vehicle and the next confirmed option. Treat town stops as places to enjoy, not a fixed requirement to plug in each time.
