A little time away

Make the journey part of the escape.

The Fleurieu is close enough to Adelaide that you can spend the weekend exploring instead of covering distance. This suggested three-day trip moves from McLaren Vale to a coastal base, then gives Port Elliot and Goolwa an unhurried day. Choose one place to sleep for two nights and let the weather decide the order of your beach time.

Your suggested itinerary

3 days. Room to enjoy it.

Day 1

From Adelaide to a seaside base

Begin with a food stop around McLaren Vale before continuing to Victor Harbor or Port Elliot. Keep the afternoon for the foreshore and settling into your accommodation. If a winery visit is on the list, nominate a non-drinking driver or use a local tour rather than combining tastings with the next driving leg. A quiet first evening makes it easier to enjoy the coast the following morning.

  • McLaren Vale
  • Victor Harbor
  • Your coastal base

Finish the day: Victor Harbor or Port Elliot

Day 2

Port Elliot and Goolwa without a timetable

Make Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot the first stop if conditions suit, then continue towards Goolwa for lunch and a riverside wander. Keep a full afternoon open instead of adding every coastal town. Return to the same base for dinner. If you want a longer attraction visit, choose it in place of another stop so charging, parking and meal breaks still fit comfortably into the day.

  • Horseshoe Bay, Port Elliot
  • Goolwa
  • Coastal base

Finish the day: Same coastal base

Day 3

A slow breakfast before Adelaide

Check your charge and the return estimate before checkout. Use a final town stop for any required top-up rather than leaving it until the car is nearly empty. Return to Adelaide with a rest break that suits the group. With more time, add another coastal night; a Kangaroo Island extension needs its own ferry, accommodation and charging plan and is not part of this weekend route.

  • Coastal breakfast
  • A planned charging stop if needed
  • Adelaide

Finish the day: Home in Adelaide

Before you go

A few checks. A better trip.

  • Choose a single coastal base and book ahead for busy weekends.
  • Check beach conditions and attraction access before deciding which day gets the coast.
  • Arrange a non-driving tasting option if cellar doors are a focus.

Useful answers

Your trip questions, answered.

Can I make this a two-day trip?

Yes. Drive to your coastal base on day one, then choose Port Elliot or Goolwa before returning on day two. Three days leaves more time for food stops and a weather-flexible beach day.

Are Victor Harbor’s council chargers fast chargers?

The council lists Type 2 AC facilities at Grosvenor Gardens and Barker Reserve. These suit a longer parked stop; check the current station details and use the network map if a faster charging session is required.

Does this route include Kangaroo Island?

No. The core trip stays on the mainland Fleurieu Peninsula. Add a separate ferry and island itinerary if you want to continue beyond the coast.
