A little time away

Make the journey part of the escape.

Give South Australia’s wine country a proper overnight rhythm. This suggested route spends one night in the Barossa and one around Clare Valley, with town walks, local produce and optional booked experiences between the drives. You do not need a full tasting schedule to enjoy it; the route also works as a food, history and countryside break.

Your suggested itinerary

3 days. Room to enjoy it.

Day 1

A day in the Barossa

Leave Adelaide and make Tanunda your first base rather than trying to cross both regions immediately. Plan one booked food or cellar-door experience, then give the town and nearby countryside the rest of the afternoon. If tasting, organise a local tour or a non-drinking driver. Stay in the Barossa so dinner does not become another regional drive and any confirmed destination charge has time to be useful.

  • Tanunda
  • A booked local experience
  • Barossa evening

Finish the day: Tanunda or nearby

Day 2

Through country towns to Clare Valley

Check your next charging option before leaving the Barossa. Travel towards Auburn and Clare, with a town break such as Kapunda if it fits your chosen route. After check-in, choose a short section of local walking or cycling rather than driving between several distant venues. Clare or Auburn can each work as an overnight base; select one around the activity and dinner you actually want.

  • Kapunda, if on your route
  • Auburn
  • Clare Valley

Finish the day: Clare or Auburn

Day 3

A valley morning before the return

Leave time for breakfast and a village stop before heading back to Adelaide. Keep the return charge separate from a venue booking so an occupied charger does not disrupt the day. If the Riesling Trail or a guided tasting experience is your priority, add a night and spend a full day without driving. This three-day version is an introduction to two regions, not a checklist of every cellar door.

  • Clare Valley breakfast
  • Auburn or a chosen village
  • Adelaide

Finish the day: Home in Adelaide

Before you go

A few checks. A better trip.

  • Book dinners and any guided experiences before choosing the overnight towns.
  • Keep the driver alcohol-free; use a tour or local transport for a tasting day.
  • Allow for hot weather, local detours and venue opening days when planning the route.

Useful answers

Your trip questions, answered.

Should I visit both regions or stay in one?

Three days gives an introduction to both. With only one night, choose either the Barossa or Clare Valley so you have more time outside the car. For detailed tastings or cycling, add a night in the region you prefer.

Is this itinerary only for wine tasting?

No. Country towns, food stops, heritage and time outdoors can fill the trip. Treat tastings as optional booked experiences and arrange transport when alcohol is involved.

Can winery charging replace a public charging plan?

Only if the venue confirms access, equipment and availability for your visit. Keep a compatible public alternative and avoid assuming a charger is available outside the venue’s opening hours.
