At a glance

A residual is a figure in the lease structure. It is separate from ordinary scheduled payments and is not a promise about the vehicle’s future market value.

Residual value and regular payments

A lease illustration spreads scheduled payments over a term while retaining a residual figure. Looking only at the weekly or monthly amount leaves that final figure out of view.

The residual shown in a calculator is an input to its arithmetic. It does not establish an acceptable contractual residual, a lender offer or the tax treatment of a real lease. The ATO’s leasing guidance addresses bona fide leases and commercial residual values.

Residual is not guaranteed resale value

The used-car market may value the vehicle differently at the end of the term. Age, kilometres, condition, battery documentation, model changes and the wider market can all affect a future sale process.

A projected sale price is therefore a separate assumption from the contractual residual. The fact that two figures are equal in an illustration is not evidence of a guarantee. Any actual guarantee would need its own terms, issuer and eligibility conditions.

End-of-term options come from the agreement

The contract describes the options available when the term finishes. A provider’s generic website summary does not establish the terms of every agreement, and the last regular payment does not automatically transfer ownership.

If a proposed purchase, extension or other arrangement is discussed, its price, fees, approval conditions and tax treatment are separate questions. This guide does not assume a purchase obligation or promise that refinancing will be available.

Keep the amount and its basis together

GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive residual figures can look different even when they refer to the same underlying amount. Comparing documents requires the same basis and a clear description of what the quoted figure includes.

  • Residual amount and the date it relates to
  • Whether GST is included in the displayed figure
  • Contractual options and any separate fees at the end of the term
  • Treatment of early termination, damage and outstanding costs

Common questions

Is a residual the same as a balloon payment?

Both terms can describe a substantial amount outside regular payments, but a lease residual and a loan balloon belong to different contracts. The contract defines the actual obligation.

Does paying the regular instalments make me the owner?

Not automatically under a lease. The agreement and any separate end-of-term transaction determine what happens.

Does EVITAL’s residual input establish an ATO-approved amount?

No. It is an arithmetic assumption, not a contractual, valuation or tax determination.
