Sydney to the Central Coast by EV: a three-day Christmas beach escape

Base yourself on the southern Central Coast for a few days, with Umina’s beachfront and Ettalong close at hand. Keep the holiday local once you arrive and make charging fit around a proper break.

Day one

Sydney to a Umina base

Leave with your full route entered, including the accommodation address and any shopping or meal stop. Use the West Gosford area for a break if it fits the route and your battery needs, then continue to Umina. Avoid adding several northern Central Coast detours just because they appear nearby on a state map.

Check in before turning the day into a beach outing. If you have booked NRMA Ocean Beach, confirm the charger arrangement with reception and keep enough charge to reach your saved public alternative. The park offers cabins and caravan or camping options; choose the type that suits your group.

Day two

A beach day around Umina and Ettalong

Choose one beach or foreshore visit, then take time for lunch around Ettalong rather than trying to cover the entire coast. Check local beach conditions and swim between flags where patrols operate. The plan is deliberately flexible: this is your day to spend outside the car.

Before an optional scenic detour, enter it in navigation and check the return estimate. A destination charger can fit a longer parked stop when access is confirmed, but do not rely on a guest-only property charger for an unbooked visit.

Day three

Return with the motorway leg accounted for

Before checkout, check the full journey home and the vehicle’s arrival estimate. Top up earlier if needed rather than departing with only enough energy for the nearest charger. Keep the return day simple if motorway traffic is heavy.

The calculator starts with a 120 km example leg for illustrating energy, not a measured distance from your Sydney suburb. Replace it with your navigation distance, and calculate sightseeing and the return separately or enter the complete trip total.

Holiday park and charging notes

Ask the park about current minimum stays, late arrival, cancellation rules and charger access. The destination’s official charger list contains both public and customer-only locations, so not every pin is an open public fast charger.

Save the NSW public charging map and your selected operator app. A backup should suit your car and remain reachable with the reserve you have planned.

These are identified locations, not live availability. Verify the exact connector, opening hours, eligibility, parking conditions and current fee in the operator’s app.

Your car. Your distance.

How much charge could the drive use?

The starting values are an example, not a measured route or a recommendation for departure charge. Change them to match your complete journey.

Include home, stops, charger detours and return.
Use usable capacity, not the gross pack figure.
Use recent real-world driving for similar conditions.
For example, additional air-conditioning while waiting.

Estimated battery use

36.0%

21.6 kWh for the entered journey

Percentage points of a full usable battery. Keep your arrival reserve separate.

Calculation and assumptions

Energy (kWh) = distance × consumption ÷ 100 + extra energy. Battery use (%) = energy ÷ usable battery capacity × 100.

Defaults: 60 kWh usable battery, 18 kWh/100 km and no extra stationary allowance. These are illustrative inputs, not specifications for a named EV. The estimate is battery energy consumed, not electricity purchased from a charger; charging losses are not included. Weather, hills, traffic, towing, load and battery condition can change the result. Use your vehicle’s route planner and keep an appropriate reserve.

Useful answers

Before you set off.

Can I charge at a Central Coast holiday park?

NRMA Ocean Beach has published destination charging, but access depends on the current arrangement and your booking. Confirm this with the park before reserving or relying on it.

Is this a measured 120 km route?

No. The calculator’s 120 km is a worked example. Your route depends on your Sydney suburb, the accommodation address and detours. Use navigation for the actual distance and travel time.

Event dates come from organisers or councils where available. Charger descriptions use operator or official destination information. Older inventories and pending events are identified in the guide; a review date does not turn an older source into a live check.
