Melbourne to Ballarat by EV: a Christmas weekend in the goldfields

A Christmas city walk, a lakeside morning and time to explore without moving accommodation each night. Ballarat offers a different summer break from the coast.

Day one

Arrive before the evening programme

Travel from your Melbourne suburb to the booked accommodation with a meal and charging break if needed. Keep the first afternoon easy so there is time to settle in before a city-centre walk. Use the Christmas programme to choose an activity on your actual travel date rather than assuming every installation includes an evening performance.

Visit Ballarat’s 2026 listing includes decorations, an art trail and December activities. Check the linked entries for dates and accessibility, and avoid promising a nightly light show where the listing describes daytime decorations.

Day two

A lakeside morning and one main activity

Spend the morning around Lake Wendouree or the Botanical Gardens, allowing the family to choose the pace. Build the afternoon around one booked attraction or city activity. If the car needs charging, select a stop that fits its dwell time and the next leg.

For Christmas Day travel, check openings directly. The visitor information services at the Town Hall and Botanical Gardens publish Christmas Day closures, so collect maps or advice beforehand.

Day three

Leave the return journey room to breathe

Check the car’s estimated arrival charge for your Melbourne address before leaving Ballarat. Add a planned top-up if needed and keep a compatible alternative. Do not turn the homeward trip into a late-night regional detour after a full day of activities.

The 120 km calculator input is an example leg, not a surveyed route. Replace it with your navigation distance and add sightseeing, your return drive and any extra climate-control allowance.

Choosing a holiday-park base

NRMA Ballarat at 108 Clayton Street offers cabin and site accommodation. Before booking, ask about your chosen accommodation category, current charger access and Christmas conditions. Check whether the bay is accessible if you are towing.

The public RACV station and park charging serve different purposes: one is a possible charging break, the other an overnight option. Keep both in context rather than assuming a shared park charger will be free when you arrive.

Charge before the busy part

Published charging stops to check.

These are identified locations, not live availability. Verify the exact connector, opening hours, eligibility, parking conditions and current fee in the operator’s app.

Your car. Your distance.

How much charge could the drive use?

The starting values are an example, not a measured route or a recommendation for departure charge. Change them to match your complete journey.

Include home, stops, charger detours and return.
Use usable capacity, not the gross pack figure.
Use recent real-world driving for similar conditions.
For example, additional air-conditioning while waiting.

Estimated battery use

36.0%

21.6 kWh for the entered journey

Percentage points of a full usable battery. Keep your arrival reserve separate.

Calculation and assumptions

Energy (kWh) = distance × consumption ÷ 100 + extra energy. Battery use (%) = energy ÷ usable battery capacity × 100.

Defaults: 60 kWh usable battery, 18 kWh/100 km and no extra stationary allowance. These are illustrative inputs, not specifications for a named EV. The estimate is battery energy consumed, not electricity purchased from a charger; charging losses are not included. Weather, hills, traffic, towing, load and battery condition can change the result. Use your vehicle’s route planner and keep an appropriate reserve.

Useful answers

Before you set off.

Where can I charge an EV in Ballarat?

RACV publishes a public charging location at 61 Curtis Street. NRMA’s park inventory also lists communal charging at Ballarat. Check live status, compatibility and access before travel.

Will Christmas attractions be open on Christmas Day?

Do not assume so. Check each attraction directly. Visit Ballarat’s visitor information centres publish Christmas Day closures.

Evidence behind the guide

Sources checked 5 November 2026.

Event dates come from organisers or councils where available. Charger descriptions use operator or official destination information. Older inventories and pending events are identified in the guide; a review date does not turn an older source into a live check.
