Factual EV insurance information
EV underbody and battery damage: insurance questions
An underbody impact can require specialist assessment even when exterior damage looks limited. A warranty and an accidental-damage claim address different circumstances.
Make the incident safe
Follow the owner’s manual and emergency guidance after an impact. Do not touch exposed high-voltage components or remove protective covers. If there is smoke, unusual heat or an immediate danger, move away and contact emergency services.
Document what happened
When safe, record the location, time, road conditions and visible damage without crawling beneath an unsafe vehicle. Tell the recovery provider the exact EV model. Ask the insurer how assessment, recovery and storage should be arranged before authorising non-emergency work.
Understand the assessment
Ask what damage was found, what manufacturer procedure applies and whether further tests are required. Battery replacement should not be assumed from a scratch alone. Whether a claim is covered depends on the event, policy terms and assessment, including relevant exclusions.
