Factual EV insurance information
EV charging cables, adapters and home chargers: insurance questions
Portable cables, V2L adapters and permanently installed chargers can fall under different policy definitions. Start with an inventory of what you own and where it is kept.
Separate portable and fixed equipment
List portable charging cables, adapters and any other accessories separately from the installed wall charger. Record invoices, serial numbers where available and who owns the equipment, particularly at a rental property or strata building.
Ask which policy responds
Ask the motor insurer how accessories are defined and whether theft or damage away from the vehicle is included. Ask the home or strata insurer separately about fixed equipment. Confirm limits, excesses and exclusions with the relevant provider; the presence of an EV on a policy does not settle these questions.
Keep installation records
Retain the licensed electrician’s installation documentation and receipts. Use equipment according to its instructions and report damage to the appropriate provider. Do not treat insurance as a substitute for compatible equipment and safe installation.
